Then Mexx disappeared from the Canadian market, and I forgot all about it.
It made a comeback to Canada about two years ago, partnering up with Walmart Canada for a collab line. When I was doing my weekly grocery shopping at Walmart more recently, I would also notice the Mexx racks in the women’s section, some casual and formal styles, such as pants, shirts, blazers, blouses, etc., but also underwear. I was curious about the new Mexx line, so I bought some underwear on a shopping day when I didn’t have time to try on some other garments in the fitting room, making a mental note that I would like to come back on another day for some more serious shopping at Mexx.
I went back the other day, and I browsed a bit through the Mexx racks. They had blazers, shirts, pants, tops, blouses, and some other nice stuff. It looked good on the shelf, so I decided to try on a thing or two. I liked the looks of a black blazer, but I figured I didn’t really need a blazer in the heat of the summer, mid-July. I work remotely and I only go to the office once a month or so, so there isn’t really a sharp need for a new blazer in my wardrobe right now. For the time being, I can do with the ones that I currently have. If later in the fall I decide I really want a new blazer, I can come back and buy one.
So I looked at the shirts. You know, the office style of shirts, classic fit, button-down. I would have wanted a white one, because I actually don’t have a white button-down shirt. My last one got donated to a charity shop after I was done with it, when it no longer fit me. And I don’t own a white shirt right now for the same reason as why I didn’t purchase a blazer on that day – I work remotely and I only go to the office occasionally. I didn’t feel the need to buy a new white shirt more recently, as I was perfectly ok with the other ones that I already have in my wardrobe, such as blue, turquoise, pink, or in various prints.
That day they only had black shirts at this particular Walmart, as opposed to the white style that was also available at some other locations in Toronto, as I had seen over the past few weeks.
Oh well, I was thinking, I’ll try on the black Mexx shirt today, since the white one is not available here. I take a shirt from the rack, I go to a fitting room, I try it on. And I look in the mirror.
And boy did I look like Aunt Lydia from The Handmaid’s Tale. It was bad enough that the black fabric was making it look so sober and lifeless, but its boxy shape felt communist.
Well, not this time I’m afraid, this shirt is not for me.
I returned it to its rack.
Maybe I’ll revisit the Mexx rack at Walmart sometime later, and I’ll check out the lovelier styles that they have – summer tops and blouses. And hopefully, I will find something really nice, worth adding to my wardrobe.
