FashionCAN, the newest event on the fashion scene in Toronto, was a two-day venture hosted by Yorkdale Mall that took place this week, on February 28th and March 1st. Established and emerging Canadian designers had the opportunity to showcase their newest collections for the upcoming Fall-Winter 2017-2018 season during this event which is a fortunate replacement of now defunct Toronto Fashion Week that was demised in July 2016 due to lack of financial support. It was only a matter of time when someone rebuilt a new fashion stage in Toronto for the Canadian designers to showcase their fashions, and the new FashionCAN has now attracted the old friends gathering together again, just like they used to do at Toronto Fashion Week up until a year ago.
This year's participants at the new fashion festival hosted by Yorkdale Mall have been Jennifer Torosian, UNTTLD, Rudsak, Whitney Linen, Christopher Bates, Paul Hardy, Michael Kale, Tara Riva, Bojana Sentaler, Lamarque, Narces, Bustle.
I had the pleasure to attend Christopher Bates' show at FashionCAN this Wednesday, March 1st. Christopher's new ready-to-wear men's collection for Fall-Winter 2017-2018 is made in Italy and it's inspired by Italian lifestyle, as the designer himself moved to Milan three years ago to expand his brand globally. Creating new collections for each season is not the only achievement of Christopher's. He has also created two lines of shoes recently, with large Canadian retailers such as Browns and Harry Rosen. Also, he created the uniforms for Air Canada employees, to be introduced with the air company later this year. The fashion show at Yorkdale Mall showcased not only Christopher Bates' new collection for the upcoming fall-winter season, but also the new collection of uniforms for Air Canada.

Christopher Bates at Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2015
The most recent World MasterCard Toronto Fashion Week for Spring 2015 season took place in Toronto in October 2014 -- five days of fashion, style and glamour at David Pecaut Square downtown Toronto. Among the Canadian designers who showed their collections for the next spring season to come were Pink Tartan, Joe Fresh, Target, Christopher Bates, Klaxon Howl, Mackage, Caitlin Power, Soya & Kyo, Rudsak, Mikhael Kale, and others -- about 40 fashion shows in five days. Some of these are established designers, some of them are up-and-comers I've never heard of before, and I hope to hear about those newer designers and learn more about their work in the months to come.
One of the most prominent menswear fashion designers to show at Toronto Fashion Week this season was Christopher Bates, presenting a safari-inspired spring-summer collection. Christpher's fashion show took place on Day 3 of the fashion week, that is on Wednesday October 22nd at 5 PM, on the main runway. Christopher started his show with a short film (written and produced by himself) to introduce the collection, and then the models followed on the runway.
Most of the models Christopher Bates works with during Toronto Fashion Week season after season are the designer's long time collaborators, who came back on the runway to show Christopher Bates designs during this fashion week, just like they did in the past two years or so since I started attending Christopher Bates shows during each season. The white bearded gentleman model whom I saw first time this past March at the previous Toronto Fashion Week made his appearance on the runway again.
As of November 1st, Christopher Bates relocated to Milan, however his intention is to continue making fashion in Canada as well, so we hope to hear from him in Toronto again soon.

Christopher Bates at Toronto Fashion Week, March 2014
Another season of World MasterCard Toronto Fashion Week is now over. The most important fashion event in our city this spring took place, like usually, at David Pecaut Square, from March 17th to March 21st. Among the participant designers at Toronto Fashion Week this season who showed their new collections for the upcoming Fall-Winter 2014-2015 were Mikhael Kale, VAWK, Laua Siegel, David Dixon, Christopher Bates, Klaxon Howl, Pink Tartan, Joe Fresh, Mackage, Triarchy, Farley Chatto, Rudsak, and others.
Canadian menswear designer Christopher Bates’ show took place on the main runway on Wednesday, March 19th, at 3 PM. The show started with a short film produced by the designer himself, as an introduction to the new collection called “Noctem” and inspired by Oscar Wilde’s writing, specifically by the character Dorian Gray. Then the models took the runway. The key elements of the new collection by Christopher Bates, which in our opinion is his best so far, are dark, black, leather.
Many of the models who strut Christopher Bates’ designs at Toronto Fashion Week work closely with the designer and come back in each of his shows, season after season, but new models are introduced at each Toronto Fashion Week as well. Age is not an issue for Christopher Bates when it comes to choosing the models to show his designs on the runway – twenty-something and up will do. This season, the most surprising apparition on the runway during Christopher Bates’ fashion show was the white-bearded gentleman who modeled a couple of the outfits with just the same grace and elegance as his peers who may be 20 or 30 years younger than him. Definitely not a conventional way to show a collection at a fashion week. Well done sir, hats off!

Toronto Fashion Week, October 2013: Christopher Bates
Today is the last day of World MasterCard Toronto Fashion Week, the most important fashion event in our city. The most prominent Canadian fashion designers showcased their new spring-summer collections for 2014 at David Pecaut Square in over 30 fashion shows during 5 days (from Monday October 21st to Friday October 25th), whereas Fashion Saturday (Spring 2014 Runway Trend Presentations) is taking place today, the last day of Toronto Fashion Week. Among this season’s participants were Pink Tartan, David Dixon, Christopher Bates, Klaxon Howl, Triarchy, Mackage, Joe Fresh, Target, Whitney Linen, Caitlin Power, and other designers.

Initially the show was scheduled for the Studio, however, following some last minute changes, it took place on the main runway. Christopher Bates started his show with a short film, written and produced by him, as an avant-premiere for his collection. Spring-Summer 2014 collection by Christopher Bates is called “The Riviera” and is inspired by the Mediterranean lifestyle.
Some of the statement designs by Christopher Bates are brought back in this collection, like the white tuxedo or the kiss shirt, but this season a new signature shirt is introduced - the flower shirt (photo #10), which, something tells me, will become very popular among the fashionable guys from Toronto. It's my favorite piece of this collection and if I were a man, I would definitely wear it!

Toronto Fashion Week: Christopher Bates
Another fabulous World MasterCard Toronto Fashion Week is now over. For the last 5 days we’ve seen 28 amazing shows from the best Canadian designers, featuring their new collections for the upcoming 2013-2014 Fall-Winter season. And if you missed some your favorite shows, you still can watch them on the official YouTube channel of World MasterCard Toronto Fashion Week.
One of the designers showcasing at this season’s Fashion Week was Christopher Bates, whose show took place on Wednesday afternoon. His new collection for men is called Bright Lights Big City and it’s inspired by our fabulous city of Toronto. Christopher’s fall collection features 16 new looks, from casual to sharply elegant.
During the show, the designer himself stepped out in front of the audience and presented the collection by introducing each of the outfits and the models who rocked them on the runway. Usually designers come out on the runway to just wave to the public for a few seconds at the end of the show, once the models have strutted the collection, but Christopher Bates came one step closer to the fashion consumers by being a part of the show. He may as well have started a new trend in the runway etiquette, and it wouldn't surprise me if other designers followed his example from now on.

Roxanne Nikki’s Fashion Show in Toronto
Canadian designer Roxanne Nikki showed her new collection for the upcoming fall/winter 2012-2013 season in Toronto last night, March 8th 2012. The event took place at Jane Corkin Gallery in Toronto’s Distillery District. Roxanne Nikki’s collection showed the lines for both women and men.
